Pretty in pink.

I love pink. I've always loved pink. Almost all shades of pink, but not mauve. Remember mauve?

Mauve was popular many years ago & I officially got mauve'd out. No mauve here. Just pretty pinks.

But first, I got this bright idea (pun intended) to paint this green lamp shade. I'm not fond of green. Not for my decorating, anyway. I have a forest green (& gold - wallpaper) 'formal' (hate that word) dining room. Seems every color I don't like to decorate with is in this house. And we bought it anyway! Here's my green lamp shade. Love the base, hate the shade.

I had some white paint, so I sprayed it. What a fiasco! This lamp shade is not the typical lamp shade fabric & I had an icky, gooey, freaky mess. I'm going to buy a new one, but for now, as kanked up as it is, I like it better than the green!

A long time ago, I picked up this gold LOVE sign. I don't even remember where I got it - Goodwill, I think. It's just been hanging around because I never knew what color I wanted it.

Until today. How cute would it be pink? So I painted it, too. I'm going to put it in my black, white, gray & pink living room.

Perfect!

Life is beautiful.

We've already determined (way too many times...ha) that I am redecorating our entire downstairs (& bathrooms) in the colors black, white & gray, with different pops of color in each room. All this is being done on a budget. Pretty much a non-existent budget. It's also been determined that I don't like much art on my walls. I am very, very picky & I don't do 'pictures'. I do photos of my kids, their art work & words. Words. Simple, lovely words. So imagine my delight when I recently spotted these decals while at the dollar store!

Oh yes, sweet little sayings for $1. One dollar! I only bought one to start with & I applied it tonight. Love, love, love!

I can't wait to go back & purchase gobs more. More for me, more for my kids' rooms. More for happiness.

Because I was searching the dollar store (Dollar Tree, to be exact) for a specific back-to-school item, I had to go to several different Dollar Trees. And I noticed something. The bigger the store, the bigger selection of wall decals they have! Yip!

So there you have it. Go get some! Liven up your walls! Express yourself & your life with words! On the cheap, to boot! Winning!!

And have you heard?

Life is beautiful!

I MADE IT TO IKEA!!

That deserves all caps because I have waited a very long time to get there! Ours is about an hour away, so even though I've wanted to go, I just never got around to it. Instead, I lived vicariously (drooling) through everyone else's Ikea posts! Until, until, this weekend! My husband needed bunk beds for a photo shoot he has this week & we exhausted all Craigs List ads, all online garage sale ads & just had no luck. So, out of the blue & on a whim, we made our way to Ikea! Now that I'm incorportating black, white & gray into our entire home, I could not wait to see all the beauty!!

By the way, Ikea is, um, very crowded on a Saturday afternoon. So we made our way in & we made our way up & walked the complete opposite way of the provided arrows. I'm a rebel like that. :) I loved everything! And the prices were amazing! But where are the dishes? The linens? You know, the fun stuff? It wasn't there & I was very disappointed. Sadly, I even vowed not to return. Sigh.

Then, we had to go downstairs to pay for the bunk beds & a twin bed I bought my oldest son. We hopped on the elevator & exited out the back & not the front that we had come in. What? I am easily confused, I was new to the store & at this point, I was just wondering if I would ever see my home again. But wait. The elevator went down & when the doors opened - what to my wonderous eyes did I see????????

WAHOOOOOO!! Another level with all my heart's desires!! I think I may have done a few cartwheels, as my husband passed out because he thought we were through. Bwahahaha! Oh no no no we weren't through! I, was just beginning!!

But alas, it had been a long day, the kids were tired, so I made a mental note to return & get "this & this & this & that & this & that & this & this & this..." & I picked up a few things along the way. I couldn't leave with nothing!

(No bags. I didn't really like that part. But, ok. Next time I'll buy a $.60 Ikea bag. :)

First time I have purchased a pillow insert, too. I really like the concept, though, of simply changing out pillow covers so I think I'll get quite a few more. I just happened to have another 20x20 pillow here at home that didn't sell at the garage sale, so I shoved that in another new cover. Winning!!

I haven't distributed the beautiful, broken, decorative glass yet (my OCD kicked in & I couldn't decide which color to buy, so I got all three. Black, gray & white! Gorgeous!).

I put my new, delish stuff in the front living room, which is really 'my' room, & this room is going to be black, gray, white & PINK. Heck yeah! Pink, baby! Why not? I love pink! And it goes swimmingly (ahem) with black, gray & white. And after all, it is my house! Rules schmules!! As I make more progress - & get all the school supplies you can't see delivered to their appropriate schools - I'll be showing the entire room.

This, is JUST, the beginning!!

Baby steps to black!

Transitioning our home from browns to blacks is pretty much happening at a snail's pace! With all 4 of my children starting/returning to school in a week or so (sniff sniff), I'm going to have a lot more time to work on projects. Which is good, because I have way too many! But I did get one more thing painted a few weeks ago.

This clock sits above my desk (those walls will be a beautimous shade of gray some day soon, I hope), so I yanked this puppy down & gave a her a nice, glossy black finish.

I didn't want to have to tape it off, but ultimately, to keep the paint nice & clean, I had no other choice. Was a bit monotonous, but worked great!

And here is the finished product! Love it! Love all this pretty, pretty black!

Two little paint projects down, 50 to go! I have yet to return to thrifting since I decided to change colors. Cannot wait to return to see what I can find in my new colors! Maybe I can squeeze some thrifting in tomorrow? That would be good! Heck, that would be great! Does thrifting excite you like it does me? I LOVE IT!

Decorating - from browns to blacks!

Oh I am loving this! I've finally made the decision to change my decorating colors from brown to black, I am ready to start painting & getting this gorgeous color scheme implemented, when it begins to rain. And rain. And rain. For days. Hasn't rained in months until now. Ha! Welcome to my world. Here are some colors I've gotten so far:

So pretty! Too bad I couldn't use them until today. But today, we have sunshine! We went to the park this morning, had lunch & then I repainted my Goodwill lamp! (Yes, again. This is going to end up being one expensive lamp!) Hello beautiful Metallic Black!

(I just noticed those two dark spots kind of on the right side, but they're in the photo only. I don't know why those are there. There are no dark spots on my lamp! :)

Kind of hard to tell the brown from the black, but it's black! This very well could be one of my favorite shades of black! It's just beautiful with a pretty shimmer. I like shimmer!

Here it is, side by side. Here you can tell the difference:

Tada! I know. The line in between the two photos is crooked. Don't ask.

Now, it's time to choose paint for the girls' room & then start spraying my blacks/silver/gray/white on candlesticks, a clock (or two) & whatever else isn't nailed down. Hope I don't spray the kids! :)

Bringing the Kardashian colors into my home!

I don't know what the technical term is, so that's what I'll call it. :)

This will be fun! I've finally made a decorating decision I've been contemplating now for over a year! This is an idea I have shared with my husband & family for over a year. They've always been on board. Now, I decided to put that idea into action!

I am going to decorate my home using the Kardashian colors! Yip!

I'm particularly fond of Kris Jenner's home. Images (& shots from their reality show) I've seen of it, anyway. I love the way it looks - the clean, crisp, sophisticated look. Her entire home's color palette is black, silver/gray & white = gorgeousness!

But wait! What's this? Brown? They have a brown den? And bathroom. And probably more. I noticed they still have black in those rooms, though.

Obviously, I am completely incorrect assuming Kris' entire house is done in the black/silver/gray/white palette. Personally, I don't like the mixture. The rooms are beautiful, of course, but I think I'm going to stick with her kitchen/bedroom colors. I have a lot of dark brown, because that was my base color. So this will be tricky! But I really don't want to flip flop back & forth.

One reason I love the black & silver palette is because silvers & grays are so versatile. There are so many amazing shades that can be incorporated into design & that fact alone has always intrigued me. Not to mention, I think this palette is so rich & expensive looking (remember my "Desiring: Beautiful" post?) without having to cost tons.

I will be making changes on a budget, of course! And slowly but surely. I'm in the process of planning/decorating my daughters' new room, too, so I'll just do what I can when I can do it.

I love decorating!

Our weekend project!

I am so excited about this little project! This little back patio flowerbed just drives me crazy! Why the builders chose to stick it there, right next to our master bedroom windows, is beyond me. The landscaping here is just nuts. Too much, no consistency, you name it. Eight years later, we're still cleaning it up, clearing it out & replanting.

My plan this summer is to spend a lot of time outside. We do every summer, but moreso, this summer. So I deemed it the perfect weekend to rid this wet, moldy, smelly, unsightly flowerbed. When we first moved in, there were bushes in it, but I pulled those. Some were dying, some were thriving - yuck. They were hideous. I was going to plant flowers there & put down fresh mulch but because I want us to eat outside a lot, I've decided to fill it in!

Here's my plan. Up against one side of our back fence, they put a rock bed, enclosed with landscaping timbers. Why did they do that? There isn't another one anywhere on our property. It's ugly. It fills up with sticks & weeds. So, we're pulling the landscape timbers & relocating the stones over to the back patio flowerbed. Once the stones are laid, my husband wants to pour cement on top, to set the stones. What a great idea! And the only thing we need to purchase for this project is a bag of cement! Hello!? Winning!!

Can't wait to get started! By Sunday, I hope this icky area is gone & we can enjoy our food & drinks on the patio without the dirty, musty smell of the flowerbed.

Isn't such a fulfilling accomplishment to complete a project? Good-bye grossness! :)

My cute, little refurbished table!

Truth: I'm not really a DIY'er. Not when it comes to painting & refurbishing furniture pieces. But I'm ready to begin decorating our home, & it has to be on a (pretty much nonexistent) budget. So painting it is. I have so many pieces I want to do, but I've been afraid to do it, because I have no clue what I'm doing. But it's now or never & I won't learn unless I try. I figure if everyone else can do it, I can, too! Positive thinking! I'm starting with a little table that I bought at Goodwill a few years ago. I bought it to go in our small bathroom, but it didn't really work like I had hoped. Since then, it's been unproductively sitting beside our couch, collecting dust. Time to put it to use!

I decided to move it into the front living room, which is where I mostly have beige, brown & aqua. Because the table was inexpensive, & it's ok if I mess it up, I decided to go bold & spray paint it with 'Maui Blue'! I took a little aqua candle holder to try to match the color. I'm efficient like that. Ha!

I took it outside & did a little light sanding, to remove some slight surface scratches. I wanted a fine sandpaper, but we didn't have any, so I found this semi-fine sanding block. Worked fine (I crack myself up). I lightly sanded the top & some of the sides, wherever it needed a little touch up.

I bought a white spray primer, but decided not to use it, since the table is so small. (Now that it's done, I think I wouldn't have needed as many coats if I had used it. That darn "hindsight's 20/20" thing.)

Here's the first coat. I went quick & light, to avoid overspraying & drips. Times 50.

And here is it, completed! Tada! Actually, it had to be done, because I ran out of paint. Now that it's inside drying, if I happen to notice I missed any areas, I'll buy another can & finish those.

Whoa! That sucker is bright! A little too bright for my liking. :) We are rooming our girls together in the near future & I'm going to put it in their room. It will be perfect!

For my first piece, not too shabby! It's actually pretty darn cute!

Hope you had a beautiful Mother's Day! :)

(Psst - if you are going to paint, I suggest not using a sheet, like I did! It was horrible, sticking & moving! Next time I will use cardboard.)

Getting ready for summer!

I've never been really fond of our back yard. Since moving in, we've done a lot of work back there. The iron fence was covered in honeysuckle & obstructed the view of the yard, so we took that down. Bushes lined the pool & attracted bees & wasps, which aggravated us when we tried to swim, so we removed all those & opened all that up. I like it so much better. And we've had about 9 trees in the back removed, too. But, it's just been blah. Not really sure why I've never attempted to address this area, but this year, I am! I'm ready to tackle it bit by bit. And there's no budget to do that, so I'll have to get creative. Being creative is NOT my best asset.  Heck, it's not even an asset of mine.  Ha!   Nonetheless, I have decided to do my best beautifying this area. I plan on spending a lot of time out here this summer & I want it pretty. I like pretty. I love pretty! (Speaking of landscaping - our home was a Kaleidoscope home - the amount of landscaping out front was outrageous! They had planted so many bushes & plants & such, it was horrible. Pretty, but total overkill. We cleaned all that out & made it uniformed. Looks like a totally different yard than when we moved in. It was hard work, too! Maybe some day I can find before & after photos.)

Anyway...

I don't think I've ever shown photos of the back of our house! Here are a few of the pool area. We did some cleaning today in anticipation of summer. It really is a peaceful area - as a matter of fact, my oldest has been out back reading for the last hour or so. My kids love it out back & now I do, too.

This is the view looking at the back of our house. This year we'll be installing a ceiling fan under the patio, between the recessed lighting. I plan on hanging a flag, planting flowers after I spray paint my old planters, relocating my craft/spray paint table (I know, funny, huh) & hopefully find some sort of furniture to place under there. The plastic containers are full of pool toys & accessories, so they'll be empty soon. I want pretty under there. I also plan on hanging lights, which the kids will love at dark time. Not sure why the top step in the pool is brown - we have no clue what that is. Hubby's going to have to get in & scrub it off.

This is an outside door that leads into our downstairs bathroom. I think we've opened it twice in the 8.5 years we've lived here. I hate that little area & I hate how they did a patch in the pebble stone & it looks like crap. Due to previous foundation issues, that side of the house has lots of those little sloppy patches & they drive me crazy. In the photo above, you can see another one right behind the planter. I sure would love to get those smoothed out & redone. Maybe some day.

This is a pretty view. The entire left side of the iron fence is where the thick honeysuckle was. I remember after we moved in, I spent countless hours out there cutting vine by vine, trying to get it off. One day my husband walked out there & just pushed all of it over the side & it all fell off. Ha! Smart aleck. I want to remove those huge bushes up against the back fence, but my husband wants to keep them. I have no idea why they're there & I have no idea why they didn't take them all the way across the back.  My husband wants them to stay, so for now, they stay. The tall 'trees' behind them actually belong to our neighbors & they are Crape Myrtles! They are the largest, tallest Crape Myrtles I have ever seen! They are beautiful & bloom white.

Wouldn't this view look so much better if they had extended the bushes all the way across? We actually have a very large back yard. That whole side (on the right) extends all the way down the side & to the front. (Nice construction. Again.)  Our pool is very pretty & I'm learning to stop complaining about it. Because it is so old, it is a lot of work, a lot of repairs & a lot of money. At our previous homes, we have always designed our own pools & had them built. This one came with the house & has been a huge adjustment. That said, we are so blessed to have a pool & we all enjoy it so much.

The kids have just been dying to swim. The water is so ice cold! The weather here hasn't been consistently warm like it typically is, so it's taking longer to warm up. Today while playing, they asked to swim again. I obliged, knowing they wouldn't be in there long, & told them just to get in with their clothes on. This one jumped right in & the others followed. They swam for a good hour or so! I couldn't believe it. Kids truly are resilient.

Before we went outside today, we did some cleaning upstairs. All ceiling fans got cleaned with hot water & soap. I hate when they get dusty & blow dust all around when in use. Yuck! I very much dislike dust. I also cleaned the bathroom upstairs. This is the bathroom 6 of us used every day for 2 years. I still can't get over it. Behind me is another itty room that houses the toilet & tub. They actually had a door on that room, separating the sink area from the toilet area. We removed the door - that space is too small to have a door on it. Even though I despise blue, this is a pretty bathroom.

And that is the tour for today! As much as this money pit has drained us & continues to do so, I really love the house. I wish we would have been able to renovate immediately after moving in (which was our goal), but life happens & renovating didn't. We'll get there. :)

Spring Break comes to a close.

Spring Break is over. And it makes me so sad. I hate sending my kids to school. But it's the law, so we abide.

We had a lazy spring break this 'round. Didn't really do much of anything. The first few days were very cold, so we hung out here at home. We had beautiful weather the remainder of the week, so we went to the park for hours, went bowling (so much fun!), took the kids to a Nature Center, ate out entirely too much, got hair cuts, messed around, blah, blah. I think they're ready to go back to school!

The more I read, the more of a problem this has become for almost any/everyone with a cell phone - DSLR's are being ignored! I even made a blog post a while back claiming I needed to pull mine out more, but you know what? I still use my dadblasted cell phone! I have an iPhone 5 & it takes amazing photos! Truth, it's just so much more convenient, in every way. But alas, yesterday I took my DSLR to the Nature Center! Everything is pretty much still brown & dead around here, & we saw next to no wildlife/animals, but I did get this one of my kids as we walked down a trail. A real photo! :)

Drumroll!!

Friday night, we went & chose the new tile for our master shower renovation! In case you have forgotten, our shower renovation began TWO years ago!! 25 months ago, to be exact! I think we have the longest shower renovation in history! (Our contractor says we don't, but it sure feels like we do!) Our shower renovation was necessary, & very expensive, & came at a time we just didn't have the extra funds. So, a lot of the reno was done by my husband & my brother, but it's time to have a professional finish it. It's all scheduled out, will start this week & will be completed next week (due to a necessary inspection)! I can't believe it & I can't wait!

I wanted simple yet sophisticated, so I chose 6x6 white tiles that will have dark brown grout in between them. For the floor, I chose brown, recycled glass tiles, that will have white grout between them. We have new hardware, a new door & our contractor is installing a niche for us! When it's done & when I'm not showering, I'll be posting the photos!

This week includes keeping our bedroom & bathroom spotless, since contractors are coming! Ha! That alone will be a chore! It's time for me to get a start on spring cleaning (ok, heck, just cleaning in general - our house has been abused lately!). Back to a normal routine this week, back to dance & all other activities & back to blogging!

Have a great week!

I have a secret!

My name is Melissa & I'M A HOARDER. Of certain items. Ahem.

What you are looking at is new, unused plastic utensils that I have gathered along the way for the last - TWELVE YEARS. Or so. I lost count.

We used to be very active in our church group & I used to save these because they came in handy for fellowship gatherings. When we'd run through a drive through or go on vacation or whatever, & because we rarely used them, I'd always hang on to the utensils (& obviously, some straws) the restaurant provided. And I could never get out of the habit. And I currently can't get out of the habit.

To put it in perspective, here's the pile next to my 4.5 year old daughter.

In my defense, in the first photo, they are 'organized' nicely, right? These have been taking up space on the top shelf of my pantry. And recently, on the bottom shelf of my pantry. (Well, heck, to be totally honest, we were beginning to have more utensils in there than food! Just kidding. Kind of.) Because I'm trying to declutter (now you know why), I decided it's time to break the habit. Let it go. Let them go, Melissa. Just let them go.

I know many of you are thinking 'well thank God. I'm not as bad as I thought I was.' You're welcome.

Wait until I show you my bank statements from NINETEEN EIGHT-FIVE.

I cleaned my freezer!

This here is one exciting post, let me tell you. I cleaned my freezer! Fun stuff.

Our poor, little frig/freezer. This thing is old. We've lived here now for 7 (I can't believe we've made it this long!) years, in the previous house 7 years so - 14 years old. A few weeks ago, I thought it was going out. But so far so good! We don't have an ice maker. It went out years ago & we just never got it fixed. We use ice trays! Remember ice trays? Would it be more convenient for a family of 6 to have an ice maker? Of course! But I don't complain. We are so completely blessed - I'll take the ice trays. :)

Truth - I don't clean my freezer (or frig) often. I'm a 'wipe as you go' kind of person, so deep cleaning isn't something I really think about. That said, a few weeks ago, my husband left the freezer door open all night & we lost all food (ouch!). So I took the opportunity to scrub it up.

Here's the before:

Pretty icky under the bottom basket & in the side trays.

And the tight areas? I clean them. All. Everywhere. I find something that will fit in the tight area & clean away! Those spaces, wherever they are in your home, need to be cleaned, too, not ignored. That's a butter knife I have stuck inside my cleaning cloth in order to slide it inside that tight area. I use knives, toothpicks, q-tips, whatever for those itty spaces.

Here's the after! It really did need to be cleaned - I'll definitely be cleaning my freezer/frig now on a regular basis.

Even though inside a running freezer proves challenging to keep surfaces wet, I went ahead & used my favorite (Shaklee) Basic G. I at least made an attempt at killing any germs inside the freezer, even though I couldn't leave it wet for the standard 10 minutes. I sprayed G on my cloth, getting it good & wet, & wiped away! I switched to a new cleaning cloth, after the cloth was soaked & dirty, before continuing to clean.

Next on the agenda? The frig. Can't wait!

How I clean & how we stay healthy during cold & flu season!

Two school years ago, illnesses ran rampant through the schools. So much so, the district considered closing schools for a week or two, to try to rid the bacteria/germs. That never happened & plenty of children missed unbelievable amounts of sick days. My kids were not exempt. Mine missed anywhere between 10-14 days or so. It was horrible! I believe it was at that time my oldest was getting Strep after Strep after Strep. We actually were referred to an ENT but suddenly, the Strep disappeared, & has yet to return! Bents hasn't had Strep in almost 1.5 years & I am so thankful, because Strep makes him just almost deathly ill. Last school year was much, much better. My kids missed between 1-5 days. That's a huge difference! Everyone felt so much better, which makes life so much happier. I also tweaked some cleaning efforts & I really think that helped, too. Hoping for another calm season this year!

At our home, when someone is sick, they get quarantined in their room. Not much fun, but necessary. We are a family of six, so we try diligently to not pass the germs. I do a lot of spraying & wiping. Spraying & wiping. Everywhere!

Back then, I used harsh chemicals. Blah. Was probably doing more harm than good. Anyway, my procedures haven't changed, but my products did. It's only all-natural Shaklee for us now. And really, I couldn't be more pleased. Now, during cold & flu season, I use one product alone. Basic G. An amazing, effective, all-natural disinfectant. I use it along with a washcloth rag.

Basic G works the same as other disinfectants. You spray & let it sit & let it dry. Boom. Done. Goodbye bacteria. Goodbye germs. Goodbye viruses.

Soak your cloth with Basic G, wipe/clean whatever hardware you desire, making sure it is amply wet & then let it dry! It's that simple! Its residual effectiveness lasts up to three (yes, three!) days after application. (Psst - if you don't want to use a cloth with the spray, Shaklee has Germ Off wipes, which serves the same purpose, just a tad more convenient. They are equally effective!) Also, very important - Basic G kills 32 pathogens, while Lysol only kills 8 pathogens! Just another reason I am on fire for Shaklee!

Moving right along...

Light switches.

Door knobs.

(I thought I'd use our beat up master bath door & knob. Ha!)

All faucets. All faucet handles. Same with the tub/shower. Toilets. Lid, seat, inside toilet (yes, I actually spray the inside of the toilet or, you can dump Basic G in the water, as well), handle, everything. Heck, if you don't have time to wipe with a cloth, then just spray! Saturating with the spray & letting it air dry will still kill germs! It just needs to remain on the surface for a minimum of 10 minutes. Some people first clean with Basic H & then spray with G. I just use G. It cleans & cleans well, so typically, I spray what I need to clean, let it sit 10 minutes & wipe it away with my cloth. Easy peasy lemon squeezy. I love, love, love it!

Something else I changed quite some time ago is changing out the bathroom towels every single day. I used to change them out every 2 or 3 days - whenever they were 'dirty'. Hello!? Doh! They're dirty every day! So now they get replaced daily & the bathrooms are just so much fresher!

No, these are not the only hand towels I have. I have tons, since I go through so many. They do not all match & that will be changing very soon! From here on out, I will only buy white towels. And hand towels. And wash cloths. I'm looking forward to having all of them match. Will make washing more simple, too. And yes, my whites are very white, thanks to Nature Bright. I honestly don't know how I ever lived without it.

Here is a photo of our 3rd bathroom sink. This sink (& toilet, but it's at the other side of the room) gets used approximately 5,000 times a day. Or, a lot. I always keep it clean & now that I use all-natural products, the kids clean it, too. All natural products have many advantages. ;o)

So. In addition to keeping the house spic'er & span'er, we take only the best vitamins on the market. It is worth the extra few dollars to know my family is getting the best & they're keeping us healthy. My kids take these every morning with their breakfast.

Don't be fooled - not all children's vitamins are the same! Many ingredients in over the counter children's vitamins are unhealthy (dyes, etc.) & unnecessary. If in doubt, Google. Lots of information on Google.

The other day I have commented that I had forgotten to take my vitamins & as a result of that, I had gotten sick. Of course, I took them immediately & the next day, I was completely fine. Been fine ever since. I love NutriFeron & I won't miss a day again, that's for sure! My husband has recently started taking them too.

So here's to a clean cold & flu season! Happy health!
